Finance Made Human

The first step is the completion of a questionnaire.

For you. As a couple. As a family.

Six minutes for your Profile, free, right after your last answer: a photograph of where you stand. Ten more minutes for your Portrait (CHF 29): the story behind the photograph.

Soon, you'll also be able to compare as a couple or as a family. Each person first completes their own Profile and Portrait.

No one sees your answers.

A mirror, never a box

What you receive will never say: this is who you are. It will always say: this is where you're starting from.

No profile can sum you up. What the test shows you is a starting point, not a label that follows you around.

How it works

For you

  1. You answer the questionnaire

Six minutes. Your first answer is often the most sincere.

  2. You receive your profile

    Free

On screen, immediately. It's a snapshot of where you are today.

  3. You go deeper

    CHF 29

Ten more minutes of questions, then you receive your portrait: the story behind the snapshot.

You can stop there.
Or go further as a couple, or as a family:

With the people close to you

  1. You invite

    Coming soon

Your partner, your parents, your adult children. A gift from you - one code per person - to your nearest and dearest.

  2. Each person responds alone

Steps 1 to 3, on their own. You do not see one another's responses.

  3. You explore the results together

One shared page: where your stories meet, and where they fall silent.

What brings you closer is shared. What belongs to you stays yours.

What stays between us

Privacy makes honesty possible. And here, honesty is all-important: if you hide the truth, you end up with someone else’s portrait.

What we do with your data

Your answers serve one purpose: to create your Profile and your Portrait.

They are stored in Zurich, Switzerland. They are never sold or shared.

No one has access to them. As a couple or as a family, only your areas of alignment and silence are revealed to your partner or your family members.

Without your name or email, your answers are combined with those of other respondents. This helps us keep refining the questionnaire. We only ever look at averages.

Payments and emails are handled by specialist providers. They know your name and email address. Never your responses.

What this isn’t

A diagnosis, investment advice, a rating out of ten.

The profile

« How you relate to money, and which of the four profiles sounds most like you. What lifts you up, and what weighs you down. »

The portrait

Your portrait, CHF 29

« The Profile describes how you relate to money. The Portrait tells you where this comes from. »

What you absorbed about money: a phrase, a story, a silence, a fear. And the voice that passed it on to you. And how it still influences your decision making, and may protect you.

And the role of money in your life: the relationship with your partner and your family, seen through your own eyes. And the questions you have never asked yourself.

Ten more minutes of questions. You then receive a teaser, the first part of your portrait. Only now do you decide on whether to purchase the full portrait. Unless someone has already gifted it.

And when you're ready, you can repeat the exercise as a couple or as a family.

For a couple

« You answer apart. You read the findings together. What you have in common becomes clearer, and so do the unspoken realities. »

At the CHF 890 restaurant, Sarah is calculating in her head. Across the table, Raphaël, her husband, doesn’t even notice: he has never needed to choose the second-cheapest dish.

You send a code to your partner. Each of you responds alone. Your profile and portrait remain your own: the other person will never see them unless you want to share.

Once you’ve both completed the questionnaire, a one page summary is revealed to both of you. Your areas of alignment. And your areas of silence: who doesn’t dare ask, who doesn’t dare refuse, what you never talk about. Along with the questions to ask one another.

Only one of you pays: CHF 69 for both portraits and your shared summary. The code the other person receives includes the fee for their own portrait. The fact that you offered the experience to your loved one does not give you access to their responses.

The principles behind this tool

What if the last time you made a poor financial decision, the problem wasn’t your maths?

The Finance Made Human methodology does not rely on intuition. It draws on decades of research into our relationship with money, a field that has finally proven what many of us already knew: financial actions are not driven by maths. They are driven by cognition, emotion, relationships and behaviours.

Somewhere, a voice in your head is still influencing your financial actions today. Or, perhaps an unspoken truth, years of silence and taboos, are having a similar effect.

Researchers have been observing them for years: beliefs about money, often installed in childhood, that drive our financial decisions in adulthood, even against our own interest. The most troubling part? Most people don't even know these beliefs exist in them.

Klontz et al., 2011
There are three ways to experience or think about money. We’ve added a fourth.

Research on money attitudes has traditionally focused on three elements: what we believe money is or represents, how we spend it, and the feelings it generates: fear, shame, pride or anxiety. This third dimension is the most delicate, and the one that traditional finance has most overlooked. We’ve added a fourth dimension: relationships. This is because no one experiences money alone. It is negotiated, suppressed, requested and refused, between partners, between parents and children, between friends.

Rosenberg & Hovland, 1960 ; Tang, 1992
Financial shame is one of the great human shames, along with the body, health and family. And it is often the one we talk least about.

The shame runs deep because it affects our identity and sense of self-value. It can even drive us to conceal the truth, lie, sometimes even to those we love the most. And, ironically, sharing the truth is often the best cure.

Brown, 2012
Shame and guilt are not the same infliction.

One says “I am bad”. The other says “I did something bad”. Two different mechanisms, two different origins, two ways of freeing oneself from them. That is why Finance Made Human never confuses them.

Tangney & Dearing, 2002
When faced by risk, no one is truly rational. Not even the brightest.

The loss of a franc is more painful than the joy of earning one. We often prefer a small immediate pleasure to that of a much greater but more distant one. These are not mistakes: they are universal human reactions, which affect all of us to different degrees.

Kahneman, 2011

Four dimensions. One single story, yours.

Your relationship with money is not uni-dimensional. It has four dimensions.

The cognitive dimension

What we believe money is or represents. This determines which of the four profiles is your dominant one: the way you mentally perceive and make sense of your relationship with money.

The emotional dimension

How we feel about money: anxiety, shame, guilt, comparison, pride, overconfidence and perceived control. This is the deepest dimension explored by the tool, and the one traditional finance tends to most overlook.

The relational dimension

How money is experienced in our relationships: taboos, requests, refusing, the unspoken, perceptions of power, and negotiations. This dimension is all about human interactions, of couples, families and friends.

The behavioural dimension

How we spend money versus how we talk about it: our financial situation, our behaviours, and what the risk-reward trade-offs we make reveal about us.

These 4 dimensions combine to reveal a personal profile and portrait.

Built on decades of research, refined over five rounds of testing.

Your answers remain confidential. Even when completing the exercise as a couple or as a family, nobody else sees them unless you decide to share. They are hosted securely in Switzerland.
